Memorial Day

Page history last edited by MrsK Books 11 years, 3 months ago

WHAT IS MEMORIAL DAY???

The holiday originated in 1868 and was originally known as DECORATION DAY.

John A. Logan, a Union General designated the day as a time to decorate

the graves of Civil War soldiers.

Within 20 years, the holiday was changed to MEMORIAL DAY

and became a day dedicated to the memory of all war dead.

MEMORIAL DAY became a federal holiday in 1971.

It is now observed on the last Monday in May.
